HIV/AIDS Abstinence Awareness
Project (HAAP)
The CYJ
HIV/AIDS/Abstinence Awareness Project (HAAP) came into
existence in 2003 as a follow up of the Ministry engagement
to participate in the fight against the HIV pandemic, which
is ravaging Cameroonians, during its International Youth
Conference in Yaoundé (From the 21st - 27th of December
2002). Through the HAAP, the Ministry has outlined a
concrete strategy on AID/HIV sensitization and prevention
which is effective, certain and consistent with Christian
faith.
OBJECTIVES OF HAAP
1. To sensitize youths of the menace of HIV/AIDS and the
need for a change of life style.
2. To promote abstinence and fidelity.
3. To fight against juvenile delinquency, unemployment,
sexual promiscuity, alcoholism and rivalry.
4. To fight against discrimination, fear, and social stigma
associated with AIDS.
5. To encourage society to offer psychological, material,
and spiritual support to patients.
6. To encourage voluntary screening among youths.
7. To mobilise youths to stand against HIV/AIDS.
OUR
METHODOLOGY
The following methods are employed to achieve the objectives
of the HAAP
1. Seminars with target groups: Secondary school, high
school, vocational school and university students; churches;
high risk groups (Driver, prostitutes, hairdressers, and the
unemployed.
2. Follow-up seminars (Small groups of 20)
3. Group discussions of 5 to 10 persons.
4. Massive distribution of tracts and hand outs on HIV/AIDS
and Abstinence awareness.
The Project has provided a window of opportunity for the
Ministry to preach the Gospel of salvation in several
schools around the country. The HAAP has been placed under
the CYJ Health department.
PROGRAMMES
The HAAP organised a training of trainers seminar in
collaboration with Dr Dora Mbanya. The purpose of the
seminar was to train representatives of the various CYJ
Branches who had the responsibility of extending the skills
they received in their various Branches.
Through the HAAP, CYJ has came out an extensive AIDS
sensitization and prevention campaign beginning with the
North West and South West Province. HIV/AIDS seminars were
organised in the following places: CYJ Tombel, SAR/SM
Peng-Tombel, UCHS Tombel, GBHS Ngab-Tombel, GHS Nyassoso,
GTHS Mbengwi (Schools), Ngombo-Mbeng, a village in Kupe/Muanenguba
Division.
These campaign, which targeted secondary and high local
communities, went alongside with free medical consultation
(with a Medical Doctor) and free drug distribution. More
then 10.000 people have benefited from the campaign.
To win the battle against HIV/AIDS, we preach Abstinence
(for unmarried persons) and Fidelity (to those who are
married) and above all, the fear of God.
